‘One year check-in’ on domestic screen rebate

Consultation closed: 24 September 2024.

We conducted a ‘check-in’ on the changes made to the domestic component of the New Zealand Screen Production Rebate (NZSPR-NZ), one year after these changes were introduced.

During the check-in we wanted to hear the views and experiences of domestic rebate users and applicants. We ran an online survey that focused on the impacts of the specific changes made in 2023.

Screen Sector Review

From December 2021 to May 2023 the government reviewed its funding to the screen sector. We worked with the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) on the review that considered ways to generate more economic and cultural value from this investment, for the sector and for New Zealand. The review focused on the rebate and its place in a rapidly changing screen production environment.

What did we change?

Changes to the domestic screen rebate were made to encourage more high-quality, locally focused screen productions with strong cultural value for both the sector and New Zealand.

Summary of screen production rebate changes

Elements of the international rebate are changing to ensure New Zealand continues to attract screen productions from overseas that deliver value for the sector and the wider economy. You can find out more about the changes to the international rebate on MBIE’s website:
