Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage is calling for applications from historians, researchers and non-fiction writers to produce stories about their communities. The Whiria Te Mahara New Zealand History Grant offers successful applicants up to $12,000 to to support history research and writing. Applications close on 15 October.

A government culture and heritage fund has provided a $16.5 million dollar boost to two cultural institutions in Te Waipounamu, the South Island: the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch and the Forrester Art Gallery in Oamaru. Te Urungi: Innovating Aotearoa is coming to Te Tai Tokerau Northland - Kerikeri in June

Creatives and innovators with ideas for the post-COVID recovery of Aotearoa' arts and culture sector are encouraged to attend Te Urungi: Innovating Aotearoa in Te Tai Tokerau Northland - Kerikeri on 10-12 June 2022.

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage Deputy Chief Executive Te Aka Tūhono Investment and Outcomes Joe Fowler said Te Urungi is part of the Government’s Covid Recovery Programme and a catalyst for new ways of thinking that will drive the recovery and resilience of our arts, culture and heritage sector.

“Te Urungi is a new approach to arts funding in the form of safe and collaborative events for people to come together and get support to finetune their ideas and proposals. Over two days, participants are guided by our kaiāwhina to develop projects that improve sector sustainability and resilience, access, and participation, and take advantage of commercial opportunities.”

Innovative projects that meet one or more of these outcomes and safeguard Mātauranga Maori are also a focus of the fund, said Mr Fowler.

“Rather than critical support in the form of payments like wage subsidies, Te Urungi is designed to be a catalyst for change so that as the government lifts public health measures and New Zealand comes out of Covid, we've got exciting things happening which will set the sector on the path to future success.

“Te Urungi is the steering paddle at the back of a waka hourua, a rudder that guides the waka with agility and stability. It is equal parts technology and art, science and spirit, and it represents what we’re looking for with this fund: ideas beyond ‘business as usual’ that will allow arts, culture, and heritage to thrive, even in the face of major and unexpected shocks like the global COVID-19 pandemic.”

Individuals or teams who work in arts, culture, and heritage, as well as those in the science and tech sectors, or from Kaupapa Māori, entrepreneurial, community groups, and other initiatives are encouraged to apply. In most cases projects need to demonstrate broader sector reach and impact to receive funding. While securing funding is a key goal for participants, Te Urungi events are designed so that everyone walks away with new knowledge, skills and connections.
