April 2017 update
In March 2017 New Zealand Film Commission senior staff along with Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment and Ministry for Culture and Heritage officials spoke to the industry in Auckland and Wellington to announce changes to the New Zealand Government's screen incentives, the New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG). You can read about the changes to the incentives, including the updated criteria here.
The New Zealand Screen Production Grant (NZSPG) came into effect on 1 April 2014 and applies to all productions that started principal photography (or key animation) after 1 April 2014.
The current NZSPG Criteria are dated 1 July 2017, and will replace the 1 August 2015 criteria.

July 2013 reviews
The screen industry reviews, conducted by the Ministry for Culture and Heritage (MCH) and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), looked at a range of government interventions in the sector, including co-productions, training and development, international marketing and promotion. The reviews found that the current incentives have been effective in meeting economic and cultural objectives but that changes could be made to encourage growth in the industry.
MCH reviews of the screen sector are available here.
