An Artist Resale Royalty Scheme is being established to ensure the creators of visual arts are recognised and rewarded when their work is resold on the secondary art market. Cabinet agreed to the establishment of this Scheme on 15 August 2022. Standalone legislation will be written and will pass through the House before the Scheme is introduced by late 2024.

Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage has been alerted to an incident of vandalism at Massey Memorial in Wellington. The Massey Memorial is a national monument and commemorates William Ferguson Massey (1856 - 1925), Prime Minister of New Zealand from 1912-1925. The Memorial is also the burial ground for Massey and his wife Christina.

The New Zealand Film Commission (NZFC) is pleased to announce the appointment of Taima Anne (Annie) Murray (Te Arawa) to the position of Chief Executive Officer for a five-year term. NZFC Board Chair Alastair Carruthers, in making the announcement today, said “I am delighted that we have found someone of Annie’s calibre to lead the Commission. She has exceptional experience and a deep commitment to stories from the diverse voices of Aotearoa. I have no doubt she will have a positive impact on filmmakers and the organisation in years to come”.

The Cultural Sector Capability Fund was designed to support the cultural sector to adapt to the COVID-19 environment by funding projects that build skills and knowledge, and provide access to advice, services, tools and resources.  

Funding was available to cultural sector leadership organisations to deliver projects that build the capability of the cultural sector practitioners, organisations and/or businesses they represent and support. This includes iwi, hapū and marae organisations.  

Applications for this fund closed in February 2021.  

Through this fund 39 organisations received a total of $5.9 million in support. 20 organisations received seed funding of $20,000 and 19 received project funding.

Future of the Cultural Sector Capability Fund 

The Cultural Sector Capability Fund was one of three original delivery funds for the Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund. The others were the Creative Arts Recovery and Employment Fund and the Cultural Sector Innovation Fund. 

In June 2022 it was announced that the remaining funding from the Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund would be delivered as a single fund. This revised Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund combines the outcomes of the three previously separate funds. 

Organisations who received seed funding through the Capability Fund are encouraged to review the details for the revised Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund, which provides an avenue for further funding to support capability building initiatives. 

An overview of the Cultural Sector Regeneration Fund is now available. It opens for applications on 27 July 2022.
