Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage is calling for applications from historians, researchers and non-fiction writers to produce stories about their communities. The Whiria Te Mahara New Zealand History Grant offers successful applicants up to $12,000 to to support history research and writing. Applications close on 15 October.

A government culture and heritage fund has provided a $16.5 million dollar boost to two cultural institutions in Te Waipounamu, the South Island: the Canterbury Museum in Christchurch and the Forrester Art Gallery in Oamaru. 8 May 2020 marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War in Europe. VE (Victory in Europe) Day signalled the end of almost six terrible years of fighting between the Allies and Nazi Germany. While war would continue in the Pacific though to August of 1945, VE Day gave welcome pause for celebration and thanksgiving.

75th Anniversary National Commemoration

A National Service was scheduled to mark VE Day at Pukeahu National War Memorial Park in Wellington on 8 May. Regrettably, this service is no longer possible due to restrictions in place in response to COVID-19 pandemic.

This important anniversary will still remain top of mind for many across Aotearoa and the world. A commemoration acknowledging the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War in New Zealand was scheduled for 15 August, the date on which Japan surrendered, marking the end of the war in the Pacific.
