Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage is calling for applications from historians, researchers and non-fiction writers to produce stories about their communities. The Whiria Te Mahara New Zealand History Grant offers successful applicants up to $12,000 to to support history research and writing. Applications close on 15 October.

NZ On Air’s Where Are The Audiences? research for 2023 shows audiences want their content when they want it – and that means on demand. The latest results from the series survey Where Are The Audiences? reveal audience behaviour in 2023, and how this compares to the 2021 survey, as well as the ongoing trend since the research began in 2014.

Following significant fono, talanoa, and engagement with the Pacific Arts community, Creative NZ are proud to share their Pacific Arts Strategy 2023-2028. This new strategy lays out their support for Pacific Arts over the next five years and is inspired by navigational stars across the skies of Aotearoa and Oceania. It is a vital, vibrant part of their wider strategic direction. Long-Term Insights Briefing: public consultation opens

Consultation on the inaugural Long-Term Insights Briefing for the cultural sector is now open to the public until Sunday 27 November.

These briefings are a relatively new requirement for all central government agencies in Aotearoa New Zealand and are prepared at least every three years. They are ‘think pieces on the future’ and are designed to provide an opportunity to help the public and decision-makers consider medium and long-term trends, risks and opportunities.

Over 150 organisations and individuals provided valuable input and feedback, through two rounds of engagement, into the development of the cultural sector briefing, prepared by Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

It’s clear from the feedback received there are numerous hopes for the sector into the future. The Ministry is grateful to all those who generously gave their time, and shared their perspectives with us, as we explored the following important question:

Into the future, what are some of the key areas that will influence the vibrancy and resilience of the cultural sector ecosystem?

The briefing explores five key areas:

Te Ao Māori

Considering the future of the sector where Te Ao Māori is woven throughout the cultural sector, while supporting mana Motuhake, and including implications of co-governance.

Funding, investment and value

Shifting how investment is made in the sector and how value is understood and realised.

Population change

Understanding the impacts of projected demographic changes as Aotearoa New Zealand becomes more diverse, including shifts in specific population groups and our sense of identity and place in the world

Digital technologies

Realising the opportunities created by rapidly changing digital tools and platforms, and considering the broader economic and legal implications including in relation to the global marketplace.

Climate change

Fostering a more sustainable sector and the opportunities within the sector to positively impact climate change.

Next steps

The final briefing is scheduled to be presented to Select Committee and published in December.
