Vision and design brief

The New Zealand Government understands the significance of the National Erebus Memorial, both for victims’ families and for all New Zealanders. It is important that the families’ views and feedback on the Memorial are taken into account. Family members’ views about the elements of the Memorial have been sought, and detailed feedback from this survey will be provided as part of the Request for Proposal stage.

For the purposes of the Request for Expressions of Interest process, below are the key criteria required for the design.

The memorial should:

  • honour the 257 people who lost their lives in the accident;
  • achieve a high standard of design through an appropriate process;
  • establish a memorial that expresses the magnitude of the events and is an enduring legacy to New Zealanders;
  • provide a location/space for hosting formal civic events such as the anniversary of the accident;
  • accommodate a wide range of users through an accessible design that can inspire a range of interpretations and meanings;
  • provide a focus for remembering; both for New Zealanders and international visitors;
  • recognise and give thanks to those who assisted in the response; allow for private reflection and contemplation;
  • provide interpretive information to educate and inform visitors about the accident.
