Applications for 2016 Waitangi Day Fund Open

Waitangi Day 2016 is set to be filled with creative and colourful events around the country thanks to community funding made available through Manatū Taonga Ministry for Culture and Heritage.

The Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund supports communities to celebrate New Zealand’s identity by commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi with local events.

Manatū Taonga is now seeking applications for 2016 from groups wanting to host Waitangi Day celebrations. Projects run in partnership between local authorities, community groups and tangata whenua are particularly encouraged.

Examples of community events held this year include a community picnic and hāngi in the Grey District with live local music, a Māori dawn ceremony held as part of the Auckland Pride Festival, and continued support for the Festival of the Elements held in Porirua.

The Commemorating Waitangi Day Fund grants average about $3000 each.
