Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision has announced the launch of the second of four online exhibitions made up of material drawn from Ngā Taonga Kōrero collection – the archive of RNZ’s Māori radio programmes. The collection contains recordings made between the 1930s and the 1980s and is a unique storehouse of kōrero, spanning many iwi and dialects. For this second exhibition of early reo Māori recordings, Te Hokinga Mai o Te Rua Tekau mā Waru, Ngā Taonga has chosen to highlight the welcome home given to members of the 28th Māori Battalion when they arrived to a civic reception at Aotea Quay, Wellington on January 23, 1946.

Drawing on the rich inspiration of The Piano, the Royal New Zealand Ballet is honoured to stage the world premiere of this new full-length dance work by Jiří Bubeníček. Originally conceived as a short work for Dortmund Ballet, The Piano: the ballet is now re-imagined and expanded for the RNZB, giving Ada’s story a new and distinctively New Zealand voice and, in dance, a powerful new means of expression. Wellington will host special performances over two nights in February with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra celebrating some of Bach’s best-loved works, followed by a summer concert by the NZSO National Youth Orchestra. Back to Bach, at Wellington Cathedral of St Paul on 2 February, will feature works by the music giant and two of his contemporaries, Italian violinist Pietro Locatelli and French opera composer Jean-Philippe Rameau.

The Darkness before the Dawn
A 150-year-old pub is among three heritage buildings to receive funding to help with earthquake strengthening. The Hurunui Hotel, a Category One historic place, was built in 1868. Constructed from two layers of local hand-hewn limestone blocks packed with a mixture of tussock, clay and lime, it has been awarded $132,503 in the latest round of Heritage EQUIP funding.

Where does our funding come from?


The work of the Ministry for Culture and Heritage in the 2017/18 financial year is expected to cost $16.915 million.

Funding we administer

This year we will administer $296.104 million for Vote Arts, Culture and Heritage and $89.596 million for Vote Sport and Recreation.

Most of this will fund services supplied by arts, heritage and broadcasting entities outside the Ministry. It covers ballet, orchestral, museum, public broadcasting, film archive and Māori performing arts activities. Other funding provides for the protection of historic places and the promotion of New Zealand films and the arts.

Sports and recreation allocations cover services provided by Drug Free Sport New Zealand and Sport New Zealand (Sport NZ). We are responsible for making payments for the services supplied and monitoring the Crown’s interests in these organisations on behalf of Ministers.

Internal operating costs

This is a breakdown of costs budgeted for the Ministry’s own operations in 2017/18.

$5.820 million for policy advice, monitoring of funding agencies and ministerial servicing

Policy advice on arts, culture, and heritage monitoring and managing Crown investment in this sector; services to Ministers, such as speeches and correspondence.

$13,170 million for heritage services

Managing new memorial projects, including National Memorial Park, national monuments, war and historic graves; administration of legislation and grants; research, writing and publication of New Zealand history and reference works including the online Encyclopedia of New Zealand (Te Ara).

$1.025 million for WW100 programme

Delivering the legacy projects for the centenary of the First World War, including the Heritage Trails on the Western Front and an interpretation centre in New Zealand.

$1.466 million for the Cultural Diplomacy International Programme

Management and delivery of an international cultural programme through a series of projects and activities primarily focused on Asia and in locations where New Zealand is pursuing free trade agreements. 

$319,000 for advice to and monitoring of sports and recreation Crown entities

Providing purchase advice and monitoring services to the Minster for Sport and Recreation for Sport New Zealand and Drug Free Sport New Zealand.
