Television New Zealand Limited

TVNZ is New Zealand's biggest free to air broadcaster and is also the nation's television public service broadcaster. Under the guidance of the TVNZ Charter the company's public service broadcasting responsibilities require it to reflect New Zealand to New Zealanders.

TVNZ's mission is to provide quality television that educates, informs and entertains through local 'home grown' programming and the best of international programming.

TVNZ is funded through the Ministry to

  • undertake initiatives and to develop, commission and purchase programmes that support the implementation of the Charter
  • maintain television transmission coverage in less commercially viable of the country and undertake transmissions to the Pacific Islands to support New Zealand interests in regard to the Pacific.

While the Ministry for Culture and Heritage funds TVNZ for Charter implementation purposes and monitors this activity on behalf of the Minister of Broadcasting, the Crown Company Monitoring Advisory Unit and the Treasury also have complementary roles in respect of the operations of TVNZ. Both advise shareholding Ministers on Crown company performance and ownership issues. However, the two agencies focus on different aspects of the Crown's ownership objectives. The Treasury's approach is targeted at the Crown's overall balance sheet and fiscal position. CCMAU primarily manages issues and focuses on performance and commercial environment and risk at a company level. CCMAU has responsibility for advising Ministers on board composition and performance.
