Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa)

The Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa (Te Papa) was set up under its own Act in 1992. Te Papa's mission is to be a forum for the nation to present, explore, and preserve the heritage of its cultures and knowledge of the natural environment in order to better understand and treasure the past, enrich the present, and meet the challenges of the future.

Te Papa's principal functions include the collection of works of art and items relating to history and the natural environment, to conserve and exhibit its collections and to make them accessible to the public. Te Papa also has research and educational roles, and is required to co-operate with other New Zealand museums in providing a national service to provide appropriate support to institutions and organisations holding objects or collections of national importance.

Te Papa is an autonomous Crown entity for the purposes of the Crown Entities Act 2004. It receives approximately fifty per cent of its funding from the Crown and its Board reports to the Minister on its performance through the Ministry for Culture and Heritage.
