Radio New Zealand International

RNZI is an operating division of Radio New Zealand Limited (RNZ), a Crown Entity Company, established under the Radio New Zealand Act 1995.

The role of RNZI is to provide a radio service to the South Pacific that will:

  • Promote links between South Pacific communities in New Zealand and their counterparts in the region;
  • Broadcast programming which encourages an awareness and understanding of New Zealand policies on regional issues of concern, foreign relations, development assistance, immigration, human rights, economic developments, the environment and trade opportunities;
  • Broadcast innovative, comprehensive and independent news and programming of interest to the Pacific region; and
  • Work with Pacific broadcasters and organisations that develop Pacific media by offering regional support and training.

While the Ministry for Culture and Heritage funds RNZ for its broadcast services to the Pacific and monitors these services on behalf of the Minister of Broadcasting, the Crown Company Monitoring Advisory Unit and the Treasury also have complementary roles in respect of the operations of Radio New Zealand. Both advise shareholding Ministers on Crown company performance and ownership issues. However, the two agencies focus on different aspects of the Crown's ownership objectives. The Treasury's approach is targeted at the Crown's overall balance sheet and fiscal position. CCMAU primarily manages issues and focuses on performance and commercial environment and risk at a company level. CCMAU has responsibility for advising Ministers on board composition and performance.
