National Pacific Radio Trust (Niu FM and Radio 531pi )
The National Pacific Radio Trust (NPRT) is a private trust established under the Charitable Trusts Act 1957. NPRT is responsible for providing a national Pacific radio network, which is broadcast as Niu FM. In early 2007, NPRT merged with Radio 531pi and established the media network Pacific Radio News.
In funding NPRT, the Government expects NPRT to implement a programme of activities that enable Pacific people’s culture and languages to be broadcast. This network would have coverage of between 70% and 80% of the population, with priority given to reaching population centres with a high proportion of Pacific peoples. The Government also expects NPRT to operate in a fiscally responsible manner and to maintain the fiscal and operational stability and capability of the organisation.
NPRT has the following objectives in its trust deed:
- Develop itself as an authoritative, accurate, current and reliable information source to Pacific people;
- Provide a communication mechanism linking Pacific communities regionally and nationally to debate topical issues, thereby enabling communities to co-ordinate activities that build the capacity of Pacific communities;
- Provide an effective communication vehicle which promotes the fostering and maintenance of Pacific languages and culture through quality programming;
- Communicate timely and accurate information on Government policies, programmes and services and how to access these;
- Promote, support and enhance the exposure of Pacific business, music and artists; and,
- Have a strong commitment to developing its Pacific broadcasting and management talent to meet the Network’s role as a predominantly publicly funded broadcaster operating in a highly competitive commercial market.
The Ministry manages NPRT’s relationship with the Crown on behalf of the Minister of Broadcasting, monitoring the funding agreement between the Minister and NPRT. Members of NPRT’s trust board are jointly appointed by the Minister of Broadcasting and the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs.
