New Zealand Music Commission

The New Zealand Music Commission was established in 2000 and is committed to growing New Zealand's contemporary popular music business.

The Commission receives financial support from the government to undertake projects in New Zealand and overseas towards achieving these outcomes: Public exposure to contemporary popular music from New Zealand; Increased knowledge and professional expertise within the industry; Overseas market initiatives for increased international exposure and sales for NZ music enterprises. The Commission manages the New Zealand music international market development programme, 'Outward Sound' and coordinates New Zealand Music Month..

The Ministry manages the New Zealand Music Commission's relationship with the Crown and administers government funding. The Commission is governed by a self-appointed board of music industry representatives.

As well as receiving funding through the Ministry for Culture and Heritage, the Commission is contracted by the Ministry of Education to deliver music education programmes in schools.
