New Zealand Film Commission
The New Zealand Film Commission was established in 1978 with the statutory
responsibility "to encourage and participate and assist in
the making, promotion, distribution and exhibition of films"
made in New Zealand by New Zealanders on New Zealand subjects.
The Film Commission provides loans and equity financing to New Zealand film-makers
to assist in the development and production of feature films and short films
being made in New Zealand. The Film Commission does not itself produce films.
The Film Commission is also active in the sales and marketing of New Zealand
films, assists with training and professional development within the industry.
The Film Commission is the 'competent authority' for New Zealand's international
film co-production agreements, and administers the Screen Production Incentive Fund and the Large Budget Screen Production Grant Scheme.
The Ministry manages the Film Commission's relationship with the Crown and administers government funding. The Chair and members of the governing Board are Ministerial appointments.
